PLA, PLA+, PETG, TPU: A Simple Material Guide

A short guide to the most common 3D printer filament types and what each one is best used for.

3D printer filament names can look confusing at first, but most beginners only need to understand a few common materials.

PLA is the easiest material for most users. It is good for decorative prints, prototypes, toys, models, and simple household objects. It is not ideal for high heat or heavy mechanical stress.

PLA+ is a modified version of PLA. The exact formula depends on the brand, but it is often marketed as tougher or less brittle than standard PLA. It usually prints almost as easily as PLA.

PETG is stronger and more heat-resistant than PLA. It is useful for functional parts, brackets, containers, and prints that need durability. It can string more and may require more tuning.

TPU is flexible. It is used for phone cases, feet, gaskets, protective parts, and flexible hinges. TPU is harder to print, especially on printers with Bowden extruders.

A simple buying map

  • First spool: PLA or PLA+
  • Stronger practical part: PETG
  • Flexible part: TPU
  • Outdoor part: PETG or ASA, depending on heat and sunlight needs

Do not buy specialty filament until you know why you need it. Wood-filled, carbon fiber, glow, silk, and metal-filled filaments often require more tuning or different hardware.
