Why Is TPU Harder to Print?

Learn why flexible TPU filament is more difficult than PLA or PETG and what to check before buying your first TPU spool.

TPU is flexible filament. That flexibility is exactly why it is useful, but it is also why it is harder to print.

Rigid filament like PLA is easy for an extruder gear to push. TPU bends and compresses. If the feed path is not well controlled, TPU can buckle before it reaches the hot end.

Common TPU problems

  • filament slipping in the extruder
  • under-extrusion
  • jams in the feed path
  • stringing
  • slow print speeds

Direct-drive printers usually handle TPU better than Bowden printers because the distance between the extruder gear and nozzle is shorter. Bowden setups can still print some TPU, but they often need slower speeds and more tuning.

Before buying TPU, check:

  1. Your printer’s extruder type
  2. Recommended shore hardness
  3. Print speed recommendations
  4. Whether your slicer has a TPU profile
  5. Whether you actually need flexibility

Do not buy TPU as a first filament. Learn PLA first. Try PETG next if you need stronger parts. Buy TPU when you have a specific flexible object in mind.
